Our crew, start to finish
When a project calls for natural stone, whether that is basalt, fieldstone, flagstone, or other regional materials, we bring the same craftsmanship and attention to detail we put into every hardscape we build. Natural stone work is slower and more demanding than manufactured pavers. Every piece is a different size, thickness, and shape. Cuts take longer. Layout takes longer. But the result is something manufactured products cannot replicate.
The majority of our natural stone work goes into retaining walls. If you are looking for a natural stone retaining wall using basalt, fieldstone, or other natural materials, our retaining wall page covers the full scope of how we engineer and build those projects. For other custom stone applications like flagstone patios, stone veneers, or architectural features, we are happy to discuss your project and see if it is a good fit.
What Does Custom Stone Work Cost in Lake Oswego?
Most Lake Oswego homeowners invest between $35 to $70 per sqft for a complete custom stone project. Final cost depends on area size, material selection, and site preparation needs.
Key cost factors:
- • Stone type and source
- • Installation complexity
- • Cut requirements
- • Project scale
- • Setting method (dry-laid vs. mortar)
Why Choose Custom Stone?
Natural Stone Retaining Walls
Most of our natural stone expertise goes into retaining wall projects. Basalt, fieldstone, and other natural materials built with the same engineering standards and drainage systems we put into every wall we build. Visit our retaining wall page for the full breakdown.
Craftsmanship for Unique Projects
Natural stone installation is skilled hand work. Selecting pieces, fitting irregular shapes, achieving consistent joints, managing variable thicknesses. When a project calls for the character and texture that only real stone provides, we bring the expertise to execute it at a high level.
What Homeowners Say About Our Custom Stone
“Sequoia's crew removed extensive rotting retaining walls, concrete steps and walkways, and aged stone patio. Then they replaced it all with modern clean lines in classic stone materials. Each piece was installed with a watchmaker's precision. We engaged them again for our long driveway and they finished ahead of schedule and under budget.”

How It Works
From consultation to completion: a seamless experience
Material Selection & Design
We start with the stone. Alex will show you samples, discuss sources, and recommend materials based on your aesthetic goals, budget, and how the surface will be used. For large projects, we visit the stone yard together to hand-select pallets.
Layout & Templating
Complex stone work often involves dry-laying the full surface to plan cuts and placement before any mortar or setting material goes down. This step takes time but prevents waste and ensures the finished product looks intentional, not random.
Installation
Stone is set on mortar bed or compacted base depending on the application. Variable thickness is managed through bedding adjustments. Joints are grouted, brushed, or left as natural gaps depending on the design intent.
Sealing & Protection
Natural stone benefits from sealing more than manufactured pavers. It prevents staining, reduces moss growth, and makes maintenance easier. We apply appropriate sealers based on the stone type. Some stones need breathable sealers; others can take film-forming products.
