I founded Sequoia Stonescapes in 2012 to build a crew capable of executing the most complex hardscape work in the Willamette Valley at the highest level. Projects that need engineering. Projects that need permitting. Projects with technical, regulatory, or logistical complexity. Projects where the design has to still be standing twenty years from now. That is the work we are built for.
Sequoia has delivered more than 500 projects across Oregon since 2012, from One Percent for the Arts commissions at Oregon State University to riverfront retaining walls under FEMA permitting. Every project is run by an internal team. No subcontracted labor. Same crew from the kickoff walkthrough through final inspection. Same standards on a small backyard patio as on a 6,000-square-foot university courtyard.
If you are designing something that has to be engineered, permitted, and built to outlast the design, that is the work we want.

Lead the design. We handle the build. Or bring us in early for a feasibility read.
You spec Sequoia to your client. We arrive with your design as the brief and execute it without translation loss. Your design carries your name. Our install carries our standards.
You are the GC of record. We deliver the hardscape scope and stay out of the client conversation unless you bring us in.
Scoping and feasibility read on a project you are planning. No commitment, no proposal unless you ask. Sometimes the most useful conversation is the one that saves a project from the wrong base spec.

Arts Commission
30,000 custom-stamped pavers embedding a DNA sequence into a 6,000 sq ft university courtyard
Ann Hamilton's commission for Oregon State University required a paver that did not exist. Each of nearly 30,000 pavers had to be custom-stamped with a single letter (A, C, G, T, or N) and laid in exact sequence to spell the LUCA gene sequence. A red-paver overlay had to spell a poem inspired by biologist William Emerson Ritter, readable from the labs and classrooms ringing the courtyard.
Sequoia partnered with Western Interlock to develop a custom typeface, a custom red color matched to two different brick tones on the building's east and west facades, and a stamping process that produced pavers efficiently across only the five letters used. The crew installed each paver according to a precise placement map dictating color, orientation, and letter. Every unit had to land in its exact correct position to preserve the integrity of the sequence and the artist's poem.
The finished courtyard reads as a living document: long strings of genetic code crossed by poem-words, visible from every window and from above. Sequoia is named in Ann Hamilton's official artist acknowledgments alongside the architectural and manufacturing teams.
“The real gift of this year is your wonderful work that made the project in Corvallis possible. I continue to believe you are the only one who could have pulled the project off.”

Permitting
A $125,000 engineered wall system providing safe Willamette River access after 18 months of FEMA permitting
The homeowner's property backed up to the Willamette River, but the steep grade cut off usable access to the waterfront. Because the site borders the river, the work required navigating both City of West Linn permitting and FEMA floodplain regulations. Roughly 18 months of permitting before any construction could begin. Site access was the defining constraint: barely enough room for a small excavator, the only machine that could reach the work area.
Sequoia coordinated with Firwood Design Group and Rapid Soil Solutions through engineering and permitting, then designed and built a Western Interlock Murata wall system in Cambridge Blend with integrated stairs and handrails. With 250 yards of soil to remove through a tight corridor, every load was staged and hauled out manually. The wall geometry reclaimed approximately five feet of additional flat lawn at the top of the grade.
What was once an inaccessible slope is now a fully functional outdoor space with safe, direct passage from the home to the waterfront, plus a measurable expansion of usable yard. The project demonstrates Sequoia's capacity for the technical, regulatory, and logistical complexity that the toughest residential sites demand.

Gal / Year Managed
Portland, OR — Stormwater Management & Driveway Replacement
The property sat at the bottom of a 200-foot driveway dropping 16 feet from the street. The existing impervious concrete channeled approximately 80,700 gallons of annual rainwater directly into the home and garage. The fix had to be functional and architectural at once. It needed to visually complement the home and an adjacent natural stone wall, while solving a flooding problem that had become a structural concern.
Working in partnership with Drake's 7 Dees, Sequoia removed the concrete and built a fully engineered PICP system: 12 inches of 3-inch crushed open rock, 6 inches of 1-inch crushed open rock, and 2 inches of bedding aggregate. Eighteen inches of open-graded base sized to the full annual rainwater load. Mid-removal, significant settling was discovered under the garage and existing retaining wall. Structural fill was pumped in before construction continued, catching what would have become a far more expensive foundation problem.
The property now manages its full rainwater load through the pavement rather than fighting it. Keystone Panorama Supra in Victorian Blend with a charcoal border ties the courtyard, driveway, and turnaround to the home and the existing stone wall. The project won an HNA (Hardscape North America) Award.

Surface Pooling
Eugene, OR — Transforming a Home's First Impression
The Aguiar driveway is the focal point of the property and the first physical thing any visitor interacts with. The brief required a driving surface that performed structurally on Eugene's clay soil, drained completely off the surface, and visually anchored a wooded property the owner wanted to elevate from cottage to estate.
The crew began with a detailed on-site walkthrough, set a date, and arrived when promised. Drainage was engineered before the paver layout was finalized. The whole grade was designed to move water completely off the surface with zero pooling. Throughout install, fit-and-finish was corrected on the spot rather than left for a punch list. Anything that did not sit right got pulled and reset before moving on. The site was cleaned and staged at the end of every day so the property remained usable.
The driveway drains exactly as designed and visually transforms the approach to the home. For designers: the homeowner now refers Sequoia and Alex's crew without reservation. Direct-to-homeowner referrals on this kind of project tell you who is running a clean site. Sequoia is a low-friction install partner because the homeowners who hire them recommend them again.
“Alex and his crew at Sequoia met all my expectations. In fact, exceeded them. I would recommend Sequoia and Alex and his crew to anybody.”
